"then you win"

Is the initiative to release the Loin de l'Œil documentaries under Creative Commons licences with the help of Yooook. In short, "then you win" is this website.

What does it mean?

The name of the project was suggested by that famous Mahatma Gandhi's quote :

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win".

It is also a very popular quote in open content community (libre software in particular).

Ekta Parishad

Is a mass organization based on Gandhian principles created in 1990 in India.

Janadesh

Means the "people's verdict". It's the name of a national campaign on land rights in India launched by the movement Ekta Parishad. The campaign was launched in 2005 and culminated in October 2007, in the form of a 350 km foot march involving 25,000 people, the majority of whom were landless people.

Open content

According to Wikipedia introduction : "Open content describes any kind of creative work published in a format that explicitly allows the copying and the modifying of the information by anyone, not exclusively by a closed organization, firm or individual."

Historically open content comes from libre software.

Creative Commons

Is an organization promoting permissive copyright solutions, mainly via a set of licences starting from basic rights (copy and distribute) to open content compliant licences (copy, distribute and modify without restriction).

"then you win" project goal is to switch the "all rights reserved" copyright of the documentaries to Creative Commons licence.

Libre software

Libre software (or free software) means open content for software. It is covered by many different licences. Unlike Creative Commons licences they all guarantee the rights of use, studying, copy, modify, and distribute.

Visit the Free Software Foundation website.

Do you use it for this website ?

Yes, all work made by the core team is done using libre software.

What about money gauge?

There are many ways to participate in freeing the copyright covering the three documentaries, but money is the concrete point to reach the freedom steps. Even if the price of 50 000€ can be compared with the price range of a documentary made the traditional way it hasn't been estimated this way.

Gauge levels

20 000€

This amount corresponds to the basic expenses spent to make the documentaries until now. Professional production causes incompressible logisitic costs, but the budget could be approximatly reduced to 30-40% by skipping some intermediaries, using only free software and collaborative work. It excludes any salary. Once this investment is refunded, minimal copyright freedoms covered by Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence will be applied.

35 000€

Is the intermediate step, so intermediate freedoms covered by Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licence will be applied.

50 000€

The leading team (three people from Loin de LŒil and Yooook) left their jobs in July 2007 to shoot the film in India without being paid until now. We could afford it to start this experience, but we cannot continue this way to make new documentaries. By reaching that level this punctual experience will turn to a viable production model, so all copyright freedoms covered by Creative Commons BY-SA licence will be applied.
